GEM Solutions Are Transparent to the Supply Chain
We find that our customers are often not aware that they are using GEM parts. So, think before you respond.. Does your system use GEM microcircuits?
At first, you may think not, but, are you procuring parts directly from DLA? If so, there is a chance they are coming from the GEM Program.
When DLA receives a request for a legacy microcircuit which cannot be filled because a manufacturing source does not exist, or there are no qualified aftermarket sources, the request is sent to SRI for the DLA Emulation Programs to evaluate.
If the baseline technology exists, replacement parts are developed and manufactured in accordance with MIL-PRF38535 and MIL-STD-883 requirements for Class Q or Class B microcircuits. Once parts complete qualification the GEM part is delivered and added to the QML-38535 (if Class Q).
This behind the scenes work may be invisible to the customer. Since GEM technology Emulates all electrical and mechanical requirements of the original obsolete microcircuit, no changes are required to the system or Next Higher Assembly (NHA) documentation.
Parts are procured to the original Standard Part Number as specified in the Standard Microcircuit Drawing (SMD), MIL-M-38510 slash sheet, or a customer source control drawing number. Additional device information can be obtained on DLA’s Standard Cross Reference Guide (SMCR).
